“Hang like a gorilla.”
That was the first simple tip that transformed my snowboarding technique. It encouraged me to relax, just sink into my boots and save energy.
The second piece of advice was even more powerful.
“Just look towards where you want to go. Everything else will follow.” Rather than straining every sinew to force my board and body in a direction, all I needed to do was move my eyes towards something I wanted to head to. Like magic, everything else from head to toes, followed on its own, without me doing anything. Don’t think about the mountain or the end of the run, just the next place you you want to go. At that point, you turn again. You make another adjustment. You choose your next direction. Sometimes we don’t need to know what the whole route and end destination are, just where we want to go next. And all the while, you’re moving. In flow, relaxed and in harmony, letting yourself be what you need to be in that moment.
