Impulse is something we associate with individuals. An instinctive action or reaction, that comes from a deeper place than logic or analysis.
Yet teams can also act on impulse. Strong, cohesive teams have a shared set of values and beliefs that guide their work. It’s almost like a shared personality. “This is the way we do things.”
What then is the role of a leader in the team impulse?
At its worst, team impulses can manifest as groupthink, narrowing the range and diversity of thought.
At its best though, team impulse comes from a culture where individuals can act on gut or instinct, knowing that their actions will be shared and supported by the rest of the group.
There’s power in this.
And it means the role of a leader is not to create rules and regulations, but norms and safe environments where what’s right and expected is apparent to everyone.
When values and purpose are clear, everyone can act in the moment, knowing they’re contributing to the bigger mission.
