A midweek thought:
In his brilliant 2005 Peel Lecture, Brian Eno described art as “everything that you don’t have to do.”
I love this definition.
He goes on to explain that although art serves no essential utility (e.g. it doesn’t keep us alive), humans have consistently expended energy creating it, so it must serve some deeper purpose in our existence.
We love to divide our time into categories to help us make sense of our lives: work, family, exercise, travel, learning, play. We also often find ourselves asking if we have these categories in ‘balance’.
So what would happen if you divided your life into just two categories?:
1. Things that you have to do
2. Things that you don’t have to do
How would that look?
